Ask the Admin #3: Slipknot, sing sangin ass corey taylor, define nu-metal (impossible), underrated/overrated, and being tall.

What do you think is the quintessential nu metal album?
Slipknot self-titled. Landing right in the middle of the hurricane it features everything the genre had done and everything it was about to do and did it better to boot. Some have even gone as far to say it’s the greatest nu-metal album of all time. Now, if you’re looking for the beginning and end of said hurricane that would be Korn and Fallen/Meteora respectively.
how do you feel about current slipknot music ? (wanyk/tesf/singles)
Lemme introduce you to this concept I’ve been cultivating for a while called “sing sangin ass corey.” Basically, Corey Taylor went and did “Bother” with Stone Sour. It was a big hit. Then he came back to Slipknot and got it in his head he wasn’t just the frontman, the ringleader of their circus, he was the lead singer. Slipknot’s decline can be traced to that moment, when the rest of the band had to fall in line behind him instead of stand shoulder to shoulder alongside. The majority of recent Slipknot music, that I can remember at least, continues along their trend of just rewriting “Psychosocial” for the singles and gesture loosely at past glories for the rest set to boring, shiny production and cheap Clown directed music videos. In other words, I’m not a fan.
However, and I will never not stress this, if you disagree with me I have no qualms with that. Do not mistake my authoritative tone and this serif font, I’m just another fan and not trying to come across as the final say on anything. I just hold them to a very, very high standard. I’ll keep going into every new Slipknot song and album as open as I can and if something comes along that changes my mind I’ll be thrilled to report back.
what’s the most underrated album from the biggest bands (soad, deftones, slipknot,lp,korn, etc) personally my pick is steal this album
Deftones, Adrenaline. Korn, The Nothing. Limp Bizkit, Still Sucks. Unfortunately I have to check myself out on the rest as I’ve either not gotten into their whole discography (Slipknot, System of a Down) or actively dislike it after a point (Linkin Park).
In your opinion what makes nu metal… nu metal?
Heew-boy. This is always changing but here goes; Nu-metal is a broad synthesis between groove metal, industrial metal, and thrash metal that incorporates funk, rap, hip-hop and pop influences. On a more emotional level nu-metal is all about taking big risks that can fail as much as they can succeed, being emotionally vulnerable, and a readiness to (for lack of a better term) sell-out.
3 bands you wish had more recognition 3 bands you wish had less recognition
Three bands that need more recognition are American Head Charge, Simon Says and One Minute Silence because their discographies are all, either partially or totally, absent from streaming. A fucking disgrace! Some of nu-metal’s all time greatest albums and you gotta track down physical copies or zip files to properly listen to them!
Three bands that I wish had less recognition: Godsmack, Staind and Disturbed. All three have songs I do enjoy but each also have albums that went at least 4x platinum, which is an absurd amount of oxygen for bands that mid to be sucking up.
how tall r u
6’0. Which I thought was the bees knees growing up - I literally remember saying to a similarly tall friend of mine that being tall is one of the few things in life with no downsides - but now, as I enter the winter of my years, have come to realize being 6’0 means back pain… though, now that I think of it, my back hasn’t hurt as much since I got laid off from my 9 to 5 (9 to 9 is more like it) desk job… hey do consider subscribing so I don’t have to go find another desk job!
Man, you reminded me about Simon Says and now I think I need to hunt down Jump Start and Shut Your Breath CDs on Discogs.
Also I just listened to a couple songs from The Nothing yesterday - very impressed that Korn were able to break what seemed like years of a holding pattern with something thrilling and inspired
