Earliest memory of listening to nu metal?

Chicago’s alternative music stations Q101 and 94.7 The Zone (rip and rip, naturally) were mainstays in the minivan and I remember a lot of nu-metal making it to my ears via those stations. “Aerials” and “The Red” were in heavy rotation at this time but I also distinctly remember “Poem” by Taproot and “Bottom of a Bottle” by Smile Empty Soul making waves too. Pointing at one specific moment is impossible but the fragments are fun to examine. Putting “Headstrong” on my dad’s iPod, Meteora on a burned CD, Disturbed’s “Prayer” dominating Q101.

Twice now have goofball-rock band Ghost been playlisted for Videoreplay (the music video request show, every Monday and Wednesday) and twice have they broke the stream! I’m not sure what is actually going on. I think introducing and moving clips around the timeline while it’s in motion is breaking Adobe Premiere but the timing has coincided with two Ghost clips now. Apparently their leader does not like being called nu-metal. Cursed? Maybe we need to do one more to make sure…

Is LOATHE nu-metal?

Yes, absolutely. One of the brightest stars in the new-nu constellation in fact. I Let It In and It Took Everything, along with Vein’s Errorzone, were turning points in critical nu-metal reevaluation as you started seeing nu-metal at large namechecked as positive influences. If anyone you know tries to label Loathe as “alternative metal” cut them from your life at once.

Oof. Okay I gotta bring back Lynn Strait first thing, that man wasn’t supposed to go yet and his death threw the universe off so I’m fixing that. Now I gotta pick a good band to play to his strengths so… I’ll take Clint Lowery and Morgan Rose from Sevendust on guitar / drums and Benoît Juillard from Pleymo on bass. Then I’m thinking GGGarth to package it up in something heavy yet presentable.
